What are the top five dietary recommendations you would give to men and women trying to conceive:
1. Take a daily prenatal/multivitamin that contains at least 800 mcg of folate, 15 mcg of vitamin B12, and 1000 IU of vitamin D (women only)
2. Consume at least three low-mercury seafood meals a week. If you cannot do this, take an omega-3 fatty-acid supplement with ~1000 mg/d of DHA plus EPA
3. Prioritize eating fruits and vegetables, and always choose organic varieties for the dirtiest dozen produce
4. Incorporate whole grains into your diet, ideally two servings a day
5. Avoid fast food and sugar-sweetened beverages
What are the top pieces of advice you would give for reducing exposure to environmental chemicals that may harm fertility?
1. Outdoor air quality: Reduce time spent in and around highly trafficked roads. If you live near a major roadway, keep windows closed during rush hour. If you live in an area with high air pollution (chronic or acute), consider purchasing a HEPA or HEPA-type filter air purifier and keep it in the room where you spend most of your time.
2. Indoor air quality: Always use exhaust fans when cooking. Never allow smoking indoors. Limit use of indoor fireplaces, candles, and air fresheners. Vacuum and dust with a damp cloth frequently to prevent the build-up of dust.
3. Cooking/Food Prep: Don’t buy canned foods. Don’t store or heat food in plastic. Avoid cooking with non-stick pans.
4. Personal Care Products: Cut down on the use of cosmetics. Choose unscented products when possible and always read the label. There are a lot of great apps now a days to help you with avoiding harmful chemicals in personal care and home products (for example, Think Dirty, Detox Me, and EWG’s Healthy Living).
